Dr. Andrew Mannes
Chief, DPM

The Department of Perioperative Medicine (DPM) is the only operating room facility and anesthesia department in the world dedicated solely to supporting clinical research. DPM has a staff of 73 dedicated professionals which consists of anesthesiologists, nurses, technicians and administrative support staff who are committed to providing quality perioperative care to patients enrolled in complex clinical protocols within all Institutes of the NIH intramural research program. DPM has continued to evolve in the ever-changing environment at NIH to optimize efficiency while maintaining a high standard of perioperative care.

We provide anesthesia services not only in the operating rooms but in multiple other locations (interventional radiology, MRI, radiation-oncology, cardiac catheterization lab). The department members are leaders of the Clinical Center's ACLS training. We also provide training for conscious sedation and monitoring for non-anesthesia personnel. The Clinical Center patients benefit from our post-operative and interventional acute and chronic pain management service.

Research and education are important aspects of our mission. DPM strives to conduct quality research and training in anesthesia. As a department we foster collaborative efforts with institutes and jointly recruit investigators who will advance the specialties of pain therapy and anesthesiology. One of our main priorities is to direct and foster the development of clinician-scientists who would become leaders in the rapidly changing field of anesthesiology.
