Elective Description
The Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology (PAG) clinical research elective rotation of the National Institute of Child Health and Development (NICHD) will provide residents a unique experience in the gynecologic care of patients between birth and age 21 as well as older women born with congenital anomalies. The resident will learn the diagnosis and management of common problems in pediatric gynecology as well as uncommon and more complex conditions. Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology is closely related to Reproductive Endocrinology and this program will be synergistic with the existing Fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI). During the rotation, residents will have the opportunity to attend weekly academics jointly hosted by PAG and REI, weekly NIH teaching rounds where challenging cases are reviewed and discussed with faculty and fellows, and lectures by invited speakers. Residents will be required to participate in a research project and be involved in scientific writing.
Rotation Objectives
Prepubertal Pediatric Patient: At the conclusion of this curriculum the learner will:
- Identify the steps and approach to the genital exam of the prepubertal child.
- Describe the evaluation and management of the child with vulvovaginitis and vulvar skin disorders.
- Review the evaluation and management of vaginal bleeding of the prepubertal child.
- Outline the evaluation and management of abnormal puberty.
The Adolescent Patient: At the conclusion the learner will:
- Describe the importance of confidentiality, and review techniques to improve communication in the adolescent patient interview.
- Understand the evaluation and management of menstrual disorders.
- Understand the approach to pelvic pain in adolescents.
- Understand the assessment and treatment of vaginitis and sexually transmitted infections among adolescents.
- Understand adolescent pregnancy and contraception counseling.
- Understand the presentation and initial management of congenital anomalies of the female reproductive tract.
Selection of Applicants
Applicants will be selected based on review of the resident's credentials and cover letter, which should outline their rationale and goals for the rotation. Only one resident will be allowed per session. Availability may be limited due to program constraints.
