Thank you for being our research partner. The NIH now offers two options of payments to you for your research participation. You were asked to select one at the time of your study visit. We are providing you with information to assist you with understanding the next steps involved with your choice. Knowing what you selected is very important because your team has submitted a payment request based on your discussion. Below you will find information on these two payment options:
- Direct Deposit or ACH—funds are transferred directly into a checking or savings account at any US financial institution of your choosing
- An issued US Debit Card
If you selected:
Direct Deposit or ACH
If you have a personal checking or savings account, Direct Deposit or ACH (automated clearing house) is simple, safe, convenient, and avoids late payments or lost checks.
NIH uses the Secure Payee Registration System (SPRS) for participants to enter banking information securely. To access this system, participants must sign in with verified credentials. NIH employees and contractors with an NIH Login are encouraged to use NIH network login for access; members of the public may register with Research Volunteer System (RVS) using HHS approved Federated login Domains and login to SPRS. RVS will provide your profile information to SPRS. Currently, members can access their SPRS account using login.gov two-factor authentication.
To complete sign up for Direct Deposit (ACH), please follow these steps:
- Go to the SPRS page.
- Select the Login.gov method of authentication. If you have not created a Login.gov, please complete the steps to set up your Login.gov account.
- Log in to the system.
- Verify your account information and update any incorrect information.
Enter/update your banking information using the image below as a guide to help locate your routing number and account number on your personal checks or contact your financial institution for assistance. Be sure to specify whether the Deposit should go to your Checking or Savings account. Please note that some institutes will only allow electronic deposits to checking accounts, so check with your financial institution if you are not sure.
- Click "Submit" to save your information. You can update/review your account information anytime.
U.S. Visa® Debit Card (by mail)
Participants who opt into the US Debit Card Program will receive a debit card and program package details by mail. It may take 7-10 business days to receive the debit card the first time. Subsequent payments are re-loaded in 2-3 days. Once received, the card must be validated in NIH's Secure Payee Registration System (SPRS) and activated before any funds are released. Please review the program materials and follow the US Debit Card activation steps outlined in the package before using the card. US Debit Card participants will receive a second notification via email to ensure the activation steps are available closer to when the card is received.
We recommend that you monitor your email, including SPAM folders, for the second email notification with activation details.
